The Architectural Association in Bedford Square London WC1 offers two-year postgraduate diploma courses for the ‘Restoration Of historic Gardens’. One of our staff is an amuensis and his dissertation on 17th Century Trelliswork has been a contribituary scource in our designs for classically authentic trellis constructions in both original and recreated traditional gardens.
We are at present hoping to restore an original 1920s roof garden in South London. The garden, which has suffered many years of neglect, was originally designed for the recuperation of shell shock veterans of the First World War, being part of a psychiatric hospital. The extant brickwork, paving and statuary and some of the original planting have remained in fairly good condition. However the concrete and glass walled trellis feature has fallen in a sas state of disrepair. An application toward the restoration for £20,000 has been made to the Lottery Fund, which we hope will be successful.
